Preorder MTG Edge of Eternities Collector Booster Box and Commander Decks

Magic: The Gathering’s Edge of Eternities is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing releases of 2025. Slated for an August 1 launch, this set takes MTG into a sci-fi space opera theme with a twist of classic Magic lore. It’s the final Standard-legal expansion of the year and arrives amid fierce competition from Universes Beyond collaborations—namely the Final Fantasy set in June, Spider-Man set in late September and Avatar: The Last Airbender in November. Despite a reportedly smaller print run and lower initial hype, Edge of Eternities is generating buzz thanks to shock land reprints, a serialized chase card, bold new mechanics, and speculation about its impact on gameplay and the secondary market.

Shock Lands Return to Standard (But Only Five)

Perhaps the biggest headline is that shock lands are back in Standard for the first time since 2019. Five are confirmed—Stomping Ground, Breeding Pool, Godless Shrine, Sacred Foundry, and Watery Grave. These lands are staples in formats like Modern and Commander and enable better mana fixing thanks to their dual-typing and untap potential.

Notably, only the enemy-colored shock lands are returning in this set. The allied-color shocks are absent, which hints that they could show up in a future release. Regardless, the inclusion of even half the cycle significantly improves Standard mana bases and adds reprint value to packs, making Edge of Eternities attractive to both players and collectors.

Serialized “Singularity Foil” Chase Card – Sothera, the Supervoid

Every modern MTG set needs a high-end collector chase card, and Sothera, the Supervoid is that card for Edge of Eternities. Presented as a textless “Singularity Foil,” this version features full art, no text, and a unique foil finish. It's expected to be extremely rare, potentially fewer than 500 copies worldwide, and always printed in English regardless of booster language.

Sothera isn't the only chase insert. The set includes borderless “Triumphant” versions of legendary characters, galaxy foil treatments, and “Stellar Sights” land reprints featuring vintage sci-fi art. All of this gives Edge of Eternities strong collector appeal and likely long-term value in the sealed market.

New Mechanics and Themes – Spacecraft, Station, and Stellar Lands

Edge of Eternities brings a fresh mechanical identity with Spacecraft artifacts and the new station keyword. Spacecraft charge up using creatures you control and then activate powerful effects or transform into creatures themselves. The flagship card, The Seriema, is a legendary Spacecraft showcasing this mechanic.

Another big update: any legendary card with a printed power/toughness—including artifact vehicles—can now be your Commander. This opens up new Commander strategies, especially with the two preconstructed decks: Counter Intelligence (Jeskai artifacts) and World Shaper (Jund lands and reanimation).

The set also has a heavy land theme. There's a special sheet called Stellar Sights filled with iconic land reprints like Mutavault, all reimagined with cosmic artwork. Expect a major focus on mana fixing, utility lands, and full-art basics styled with deep-space illustrations. Galaxy foil basics and potential mythic rare lands round out what could be one of the most land-rich sets ever.

Early Power Highlights and Metagame Impact

One standout card already previewed is Tezzeret, Cruel Captain—a colorless planeswalker with artifact synergies. He has no plus ability but gains loyalty whenever an artifact enters under your control. His abilities include untapping artifacts, tutoring low-mana artifacts directly into your hand, and an emblem that animates artifacts permanently.

Tezzeret could be a major player in Commander, Standard, and possibly even Legacy. Being colorless makes him extremely flexible, and his synergy with cards like Sol Ring, Treasures, or Bauble-type effects could push him into dangerous territory in formats with artifact combos.

Shock lands alone will reshape Standard mana bases. The return of high-quality dual lands means players can build multi-color decks with more consistency. Paired with new mechanics like Spacecraft and lands that matter, there’s room for innovative archetypes that bridge competitive and casual playstyles.

Will Edge of Eternities Sink or Soar?

There’s cautious optimism around this set’s release. It follows extremely hyped sets like Tarkir: Dragonstorm and Final Fantasy, and precedes the massive Universes Beyond drops like Spider-Man. The timing puts it in a risky slot, and early reports suggest the print run may be the smallest of any 2025 MTG set so far. Some distributors are reportedly receiving reduced allocations, especially of Collector Boosters.

That scarcity could lead to long-term value. We’ve seen other under-printed sets gain popularity later due to strong mechanics or collectible appeal. Edge of Eternities might not start hot, but the gameplay, serialized cards, and land-focused design could create a sleeper hit that ages well. As of today, June 21st, Collector Boosters have gone past their MSRP on TCGPlayer, with just less than 6 weeks until release. This might be the trend that follows for collectibles this year.

Secondary Market Outlook – Scarcity and Staples Drive Value

From a financial perspective, Edge of Eternities offers several factors that collectors and investors watch for: serialized cards, limited print run rumors, and high-demand reprints like shock lands. The shock lands alone provide a stable foundation for value, and the introduction of new chase cards like the Singularity foil Sothera gives Collector Boosters major appeal.

Tezzeret could become one of the most impactful colorless planeswalkers in years. If his playability matches the hype, his price could spike quickly. Combined with rumors of a mythic land cycle and exclusive Commander support, the set is likely to be cracked aggressively by both players and collectors.

If the print run is truly lower, sealed product could become scarce—and valuable—within a few months, especially if other 2025 sets overshadow it and suppress early sales.

Summary: Edge of Eternities may not have Spider-Man’s brand recognition or Final Fantasy’s built-in fanbase, but it’s delivering shock lands, a powerful planeswalker, unique mechanics, and collector-level inserts in a tight, space-themed package. With rumors of a smaller print run, strong gameplay, and visually striking cards, this set could quietly become one of the most desirable of the year.
